My Students

Albert Einstein once said, "Creativity is intelligence having fun." As an art teacher, I am in the business of helping young artists develop both creativity and intelligence!

My student artists, many first and second-generation Americans, are growing up in a large urban school district, whose budget cuts resulted in the suspension of our school's art program for many years.

Our tremendous school community dreamed of bringing our students an art program, and have been thrilled to watch our students' creativity blossom. Now entering its 8th year, our art program has moved into a new classroom, transitioned to a choice-based-studio, and continues to see fantastic results. From September to June the walls of our school are covered with beautiful pieces that make students proud. Each year culminates with a school-wide art gallery and sees students represented in district-wide art shows!

My Project

As an educator who values creativity, innovation, and student's voice, I want students to be the directors of their own artistic experience.

In a choice-based studio, student-artists set goals, design projects, and identify and seek experience with necessary skill sets to achieve their best final results.

While students are challenged to take ownership over the content and stylistic elements of their work, each is guided through the design process, becoming experts in brainstorming, independent research, experimentation, peer review, and self-expression. In essence, the students learn to "do the work of artists."

One of the most important habits an artist can maintain is the practice of keeping a sketchbook. An artist's sketchbook is a place where they gather inspiration and work through ideas and challenges. It a place to make mistakes, take risks and explore ideas without the pressures of producing a final draft. It is through a sketchbook practice, that artists can find and define their voice, as well as develop the technical skills to bring success to those final pieces; both skills essential to middle school artistic and personal growth.

These student sketchbooks will become a home base for the independent learning of our 8th-grade artists, who have spent the last 3 years transitioning into a choice-based, student-directed studio and are ready to stretch their artistic wings! Students will use their sketchbooks each week to document their own artistic process. One student may be testing a variety of blending techniques with chalk pastels, while another is collecting images for photomontage, a third is reworking a sketch for their upcoming sculpture, a fourth is sketching from another artist work that inspires them, and another is journaling about their day as a means of idea generation. Students will look back at their sketchbooks and gain awareness of both process and progress.
