Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a wonderfully spirited group of fourth grade students every year. We are located in a very low socio-economic area in Northern California. The children are mainly African-American and first generation Mexican-Americans.
The students that I serve all have a story that includes struggle, hardship, survival and love. Their situation is often times unfair and out of their control. I would like my students to know that they are not alone in their struggles now or in the future.
The book "Bud, Not Buddy" is the story of a boy their age who is trying to find his father. It takes place during the Depression of the 1930's. He deals with foster care, racism, hunger and doing almost anything to survive.
Having a class set of books allows me to do an in depth book study while teaching all of the necessary fourth grade standards. It enables me to use a book that is relevant to their lives and in its entirety. The students that I serve very rarely have the opportunity to finish an entire novel with clear understanding and guidance along the way.
As you know, the state of the nation's educational system is in jeopardy due to lack of funding. We, as educators, need people such as yourself to help us be effective with our students regardless of leader's misguided funding cuts. The students that I serve could benefit in such profound ways from their reading abilities to their self esteem. Being poor should not mean that you get a poor education.
