I teach in a struggling district at an overflow school that has an 75%+ free and reduced lunch population. I teach 7th & 8th grade Art in a district and city that don't see a need for art in schools. I fight every day to make the school a safer place for students to learn. Getting students involved in any way is a challenge so when I find something that works I jump on it and try to do more...
I taught a technology class during the summer, aside from the students not having the basics skills of saving files, typing or being able to research a topic. They also need to work on their reading skills, which are terrible. I discovered that they really like to talk and act... but not be seen. I also discovered that with a little motivation and the support of the class, even the worst reader in the world will try... and eventually succeed.
So... I have students that like to talk, act, not be seen and need help reading. I want to incorporate technology to get them even more interested... throw in a little performing arts.... and top it off with some reading.
I have wanted to do Podcasting for a while... this is a way of recording audio and putting it on the internet so anyone can download and listen to the shows. In my case I am wanting to do small plays and redo classic shows like Batman, Superman and Dick Tracey (anything kids might like)
I have the computer and the software... as well as the knowhow to do it. I just need more recording stations.
I had previously set up a microphone directly into a computer and recording directly into a free program called Audacity. It was rough, had amazingly long pauses between different characters but the students loved it.
So I want to take it to the next step; hopefully expanding this to more students, improving reading, improving grades and impacting about 700 students and their families.
Equipment: The four microphones, four microphones cables and mixer enable four groups to record their lines without having to fight for one microphone. The mixer has a USB connection so I can connec
Not only will you empower students in this school to try, but you will foster a sense of accomplishment and ownership in something that is theirs. They don't want to do much and reading isn't a priority... I will be more than happy to send you a link to them when we get them rolling and you can hear the project succeed for yourself! Thanks!
