This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Velocity and graphing are abstract concepts for 8th graders. They may be able to memorize a formula or put points on a graph from data and still not have a feel for the concept. They need hands on experience to solidify these ideas.

Our school is in California, and my students come from diverse backgrounds.

Our biggest obstacle is that we have almost 80% of our students on free and reduced lunch, and they do not have the resources at home to support their learning. Lab days are exciting days for all my students, interest soars.

My Project

With up to 40 students in a class hands on activities becomes a time and space management challenge. In addition to the activity management, speed and graphing are a tough concept for 8th graders in their math and science classes I want a manageable way to give 40 students in a classroom direct experience with varying speeds. The product description states, “An effective introduction to proper techniques of graphing and a powerful way to connect a physical science concept (velocity) with a mathematical idea (slope).” Students will be able to work individually and in groups. Everyone will have direct access to the equipment. No one will be empty handed on lab day.

The more interactive activities I can provide to my students, the more likely they will see science as interesting, approachable, and worthy of pursuit.

Student will have a concrete experience with some abstract science and mathematical concepts. These bubble tubes will be used in my classes and the classes of my colleague. All 8th graders (about 400) will benefit this year and the years to come.
