DIS is a Positive and Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS) school. Through this, we have several mentoring programs such as Peer Mentoring, Staff Mentoring, and a Mustang Male Mentoring Club. These programs focus on personal responsibility, character, perseverance, and being resilient. We will be using these materials to help foster perseverance and resilience while building upon character and personal responsibility.
We have found books for students to discuss and then implement the techniques that help calm their mind and body.
For example, there are lessons about letting go of negative thoughts and identifying their unique gifts that each student has. We are also wanting professional development books to help incorporate teaching grit in the classroom. The professional development books will be used in PLC groups throughout the academic year.
As part of the schoolwide mentorship program, incentives play a major role in fostering the positive relationships built between the student and the mentor. In addition to incentives, the 6th grade peer mentors this year have formed a very close bond with each other. Although the trained peer mentors will be leaving us, a shared memory through photos helps sustain the relationship built between them. It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Thus we have included items in our grant to share the memories through photographs.
We will be focusing mainly on 'Mentorship and Citizenship' specifically HE.68R.3.1 and HE.68.R.3.2. We will also focus on 'Character' and 'Personal Responsibility' such as HE.68.R.1.1, HE.68.R.1.2, HE.68.R.1.3, HE.68.R.2.1 and HE.68.R.2.3 .
