Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine being required to do something you cannot do. Our students need to build independence, but they are unable to get to supplies around the classroom without an adult's help. "But it's too high, I can't reach it!" What if you can change that? What if all it takes are tables?
Kindergarten is the most exciting year in school, because it's the first time a child walks into the school building without their family.
From that first step into the classroom, a child is building their independence in school. Our Kindergarten class has 25 students all from diverse, multi-cultural backgrounds. We are an urban, high needs community that is comprised of families that are new to the country. Like our Kindergarteners, our school's families are also building their independence in the United States. Our school has been working hard to teach our students AND the community's families. It has been diligent work, but we hope it pays off year by year.
My Project
We received a back table that we converted to a computer center from DonorsChoose last year. It has completely changed the classroom for the better. We are now able to have a computer center and incorporate technology into our studies each and every day!
We would love to continue to foster that sense of independence and interdependence in small group work. As of right now, we have our materials tucked away in bins. This is great for storage, but when we want to put out the centers, there is no place for the children to "grab and go". We hope that with two new tables, we can create a small group area where students can work in pairs or teams to complete work. These tables would also serve as a countertop to display centers and help students reach materials that they need.
Even though tables seem minor on a grand scale of things needed for a classroom, in this case, they're not just furniture.
They are independence builders and team meeting places. Each year, students will grow independently and interdependently through the use of these tables. These tables aren't "throw away" items, but permanent reminders of your generosity and kindness to helping our students and classroom. Thank you!!! :)
