Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students and their families are really special. We have a large school, with an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse population, and we work hard to create opportunities for our community to get together to share their unique experiences and engage in and celebrate learning.
With a majority of the families in our school living in poverty, we try to create innovative learning experiences that build our students' repertoire.
We want to offer students at our Title I public school the same sorts of experience that students in rich public schools receive. We are focused on social justice and educational equity.
My Project
We have a variety of GREAT novels in our classroom library: Wonder, The Giver, A Monster Calls, Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Stuck in Neutral and others. Students love these young adult novels, and we read them as part of our English Language Arts class and during our daily sustained silent reading (SSR) period.
This project helps us create a more inclusive classroom library.
Brown Girl Dreaming, written by an African-American woman, tells the story of the author's experiences growing up during the time of the Civil Rights Movement. It offers not only a female perspective, but also discusses the experience of a person of color during a challenging (yet sometimes hopeful) time in American history. This novel will serve as a springboard for many important class conversations about racism, implicit bias, and empathy.
Thank you for considering funding this project that will help us have a classroom library that is more inclusive and reflective of our classroom community.
