Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are mostly from lower income households, where their families are either struggling to get by or experiencing the hardships of mothers, fathers, and even siblings living apart from one another, many times in another country. They end up in our schools with a variety of needs, often times not speaking the language, having any family near, or sometimes sharing living quarters with relative strangers.

Our students are immigrants and minorities, many who come with very little by way of money or experience and need something to keep them motivated and excited to keep coming to school everyday.

We love them all the same, and so we decided to create a baseball team that will allow them to develop bonds with others who have similar interest, on a baseball diamond where the grass is always green and it isn't over until the fat lady sings.

My Project

My students need baseball gear for the upcoming season, funding is always hard to come by and our students and school often times struggle with providing the resources necessary for success on the baseball diamond.

When I was hired as a social studies teacher in the fall of 2014, we didn't have a baseball team.

I didn't really understand why, since all you would hear and see in the halls were students all decked out in their favorite team's fitted caps and jerseys talking about how the Yankees are the best or how the Mets "run" New York, by students. Perhaps it was because we're a small school that shares our building with two other excellent schools that a baseball team never got off the ground. Nevertheless, it dawned on me that this was my chance to do something I both love and could share with our students after school in a safe and caring environment.

That being said we're reaching out because we don't have a gym to practice in and we need batting nets where students could hit balls off a tee safely into, while being in a classroom setting during practice. The weighted training balls are also a big factor for us, being that space is limited in our area, these balls will allow our student-athletes the ability to practice in a smaller spaces and not worry about chasing balls down in the crowded spaces we share when outside, all while getting stronger in the process. Having these key items will allow us to hold practice nearly everyday and carry out our mission of nurturing and developing the young men of tomorrow.
