My students need a Rekenrek set, Power Pens for money cards, Osmo Pizza Kit with bases, Teachers Pay Teachers games, and items for a classroom store to learn about Financial Literacy.
My students are dreamers, problem solvers, and likely the most creative little people you will ever meet.
They are a happy group of first graders who love school, and they love to learn.
One hundred percent of our school qualifies for free breakfast and lunch, yet they don't let hardships stand in their way. My students' economic situations are just as varied as are their family dynamics. We have military families, with a local National Guard unit in our area and an Air Force base close by. We aim to take good care of our military families. Our district includes an Indian Reservation, and we have a high population of Hispanic students, many of whom have family members who work in the agricultural industry.
My Project
It's that time of year when my first graders are learning about money. We focus on identifying and counting coins as well as earning, saving, and spending money. I create a student store where they earn and spend money. The trinkets in this project like the dinosaur and cars toys will be used in our classroom economy store. The Osmo Pizza game as well as the Rekenreks and Power Pens will be placed in our math stations. Each of these items will strengthen my first graders number sense and give them practice with identifying and counting money. The Teachers Pay Teachers gift card will be used to purchase additional math and money games for stations.
According to a 2015 study by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), teaching financial skills to kids before they enter college or the workforce is crucial to helping them grow into adults who can achieve financial security and success.
All of these items I am requesting will teach my students about financial literacy. They will be a fun way to learn and perfect for first graders. Thank you for helping my students learn the importance of earning, saving, and spending money.
