My Students

Our students are hard-working, super-caring and curious learners.

Now, more than ever, we need to foster creativity, empathy and cultural literacy through music!

Music teaches our students to imagine, innovate, collaborate and respond with wonderment and awe, and to respect the artistic contributions of all cultures. They love and need music. They soak it up every chance they get. Whether it’s composing their own melodies, producing their first notes on the saxophone, belting out a catchy melody or relating music to culture and history, they can’t get enough. Many of our fifth graders arrive early in the morning and stay late after school to rehearse. Many students come to school to practice before they have even eaten breakfast! At our school, we have an extremely enthusiastic community of students, parents, administrators and faculty, who recognize the importance of music in education and in life.

My Project

Imagine one of our youngsters laying down their own jazz improvisation on the slide trombone, belting out an infectious melody on the recorder or banging out the bass notes on bass orff metallophone. Playing an instrument promotes creative and critical thinking, emotional awareness, cognitive growth, collaboration and cultural knowledge. It encourages grit by rewarding those who work hard and it functions therapeutically by providing an aesthetic outlet for student expression.

Our program brings music to over nine hundred students in South Brooklyn, but it will not survive without your support!

In our band, percussion ensemble and chorus rehearsals, our students will use these instruments to master the fundamentals of instrumental playing. They will participate in the therapeutic activity of creating music and collaborate with their peers in various performances throughout the year. Our students will also use these instruments in our core music classes where they will draw connections between music and history, culture and other disciplines through their performances and collaborations.
