Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am currently a Literacy teacher. I teach in a high needs New York middle school. The focus of my classroom is to create life-long readers. My students are diverse learners, and I need a variety of books to put in my library to serve all of my students' reading levels.
My students have to overcome many language barriers, learn the English language and required school concepts with little or no help from their parents.
Their parents are unable to help them in the educational area due to lack of knowledge and understanding of the English language as well as knowledge of these concepts.
My students work hard and often support their mothers and fathers by running household errands and watching younger siblings. Unfortunately, the majority of the students in my school are struggling financially. Some of our students even reside in shelters.
Most students qualify for the state's free or reduced price meal program. Due to the budget cuts schools are facing, teachers are no longer able to personally give each student the resources they desire. I have a limited supply of novels that excite my students to read and become more literate in this ever changing society.
My Project
My students would greatly appreciate and take huge advantage of the novels selected including Matched, Crossed, The Maze Runner, The Book Thief, Crank, etc. My students love to read, but really have trouble finding books that they are interested in.
By having these books easily available in my classroom, my students will be more apt to read them. Many of my students are resistant to reading. In my library I only have a few high interest books that the students need to compete for. I would love to acquire more novels that actively engage them. I hope that finding books that pique their interest will spark a passion for reading. My students would greatly appreciate and take huge advantage of the novels I have requested.
With your help, I hope to create a reading center for my literacy classes.
This will be a place to reference and discover the joys of reading. Supplying my students with these books would be a small step, but it would give my students one less obstacle to overcome on their own.
