I teach mathematics to middle school students in the Bronx, NY with general education and students who receive special education services.
My students are in middle school.
They are predominately Black and Latino/Hispanic. In my school we call the students "ambassadors" because we want them to be the catalysts and leaders for change and reform. We meet every morning as a whole school community and accomplishments of our students and staff are celebrated at least once per month.
My Project
My students will learn about the events leading up to the attack on the young Pakistani school girl, Malala Yousafzai, for speaking out on girls' education. They will also learn about the events after she was attacked, including her speech to the United Nations and Nobel Peace Prize win.
My students will go to see the movie, "He Named Me Malala." This movie is about a young girl's perseverance in her fight for equal opportunity for education.
I want my students to see that education is sometimes taken for granted, but there are people in the world who are denied an education. I am hoping they walk away with a sense of appreciation and respect for the education they are able to receive.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
