We're a public school in the South Bronx. You know, where people think of the kids as fighting to get out. Please know that instead, they want a good education and a fun high school experience (with all the bells and whistles) right where they are. So many have grown up worries and responsibilities which can make them hard, but as an art teacher, often I am privileged to see the child within.
They work hard, have great imaginations and are not afraid to be themselves.
Providing them with projects that make them think, inspire their creativity and invite them to express themselves is very important to me. Making sure they have high-quality supplies is the least I can do to reinforce the narrative that they are important. They already make me proud, and I'm sure they'll make you proud to be part of their projects.
My Project
One art room that houses 2 ceramics classes, 4 printmaking classes, a class of paper mâché projects, and an AP Drawing class can sometimes get a bit... cluttered. Who am I kidding? The word hoarder has been bandied about. We are swimming in pinch pots, jam-packed with greenware and overrun with projects mid coil!
A full size ware cart will go a long way to organizing our work and keeping it safe from being pushed, broken or squished.
The students will have a place for their work in each step of the ceramic process, and I won't be called to find a project that's "disappeared." In short, the art studio will be the calm, secure, and creative haven its meant to be. Please help us make it a truly safe space for our work. Thanks!
