These materials immediately transformed our science lessons into hands-on, engaging experiences. Instead of only reading about insects and animals, students were able to physically interact with models, specimens, and live organisms. Using the Science Viewer, students are carefully examined body parts such as antennae, wings, legs, and segmented bodies. This helped them understand how structure relates to function, which is a key concept in 8th grade life science. Students worked collaboratively, taking turns observing specimens and discussing what they noticed using appropriate scientific vocabulary.\r\n\r\nThe butterflies brought everyone together and provided powerful learning opportunities as students observed the full life cycle in real time. Watching the caterpillars eat, grow, form a chrysalis, and eventually emerge as butterflies created excitement and anticipation throughout the classroom. Each stage sparked meaningful discussions about metamorphosis, growth, and change. Students who typically struggle with focus or participation were especially engaged, often reminding the class to check on the caterpillars and eagerly sharing daily observations. This experience made science feel real and personal, helping students connect abstract concepts to living organisms. As the butterflies emerged from the cocoon, students were able to witness a moment of transformation that reinforced both scientific understanding and a sense of shared responsibility and care.\r\n\r\nThe models and kits were also used to elaborate on science vocabulary and strengthen academic language. Words such as *larva*, *pupa*, *metamorphosis*, *organism*, *habitat*, and *life cycle* were no longer just terms from a textbook. Students could see, touch, and explain these concepts using the materials. The Lakeshore Easy-View Early Science Kits allowed students to classify, compare, and describe specimens while practicing observation and inference skills. The Insects & Spiders Science Viewer encouraged students to slow down, observe carefully, and record detailed notes, which supported both scientific thinking and writing skills.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, their reactions were filled with excitement, curiosity, and amazement. Many students asked thoughtful questions, such as why caterpillars change shape, how butterflies survive in nature, or how insects differ from spiders. The solar system model and planetarium projector also captured students' attention by helping them visualize planets, orbits, and space concepts that can be difficult to imagine. Seeing the planets projected around the room made astronomy feel immersive and engaging, helping students better understand scale, motion, and relationships within the solar system.\r\n\r\nYour generosity allowed students to experience science in a meaningful, memorable way. These resources gave students a sense of ownership and pride in their learning, as they felt trusted to handle real tools and living organisms. The shared excitement around these materials helped build a positive classroom community and encouraged collaboration and respectful discussion.\r\n\r\nThe next steps for students include maintaining science journals to record observations, diagrams, and reflections related to the butterfly life cycle and insect studies. Students will use their notes to create written explanations and visual models that demonstrate their understanding. They will also compare insects and spiders, connect their observations to ecosystem lessons, and apply newly learned vocabulary in both speaking and writing tasks. These materials will continue to support inquiry-based learning, deepen student engagement, and strengthen understanding as we move forward with our current life science and earth science units.","fullyFundedDate":1757003035002,"projectUrl":"project/ms-getfields-science-classroom/9664700/","projectTitle":"Ms. Getfield's Science Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Getfield","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10058530"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_99665","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":null,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":74,"percentAsian":14,"percentBlack":16,"percentWhite":12,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":34,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Not specified","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Record","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"UNCLASSIFIED","ncesMetroType":null},"inStateSupporters":81.1,"schoolId":99665,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Bronx Studio School for Writers & Artists on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Bronx Studio School for Writers & Artists","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/urban-assembly-school-for-writers-and-artists/99665"}
