Bronx Bookworms: Help Enrich Our Classroom Reading Center
My students need books in a leveled library (levels A-E), and items for reading centers such as Ending-Sounds Match-Ups and Fill-in-the-Blank Phonics Stamps.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The children come into the classroom everyday ready to learn! They excitedly greet their friends and get ready for our morning routine. I have a passion for music and poetry so we sing songs and read a different poem everyday!
The students in my class all live in the vicinity around the school in the South Bronx.
They come from a variety of different cultural backgrounds. I have students who ask each day if there will be school tomorrow. That moment of glee when I say yes- is what makes my job worth it. There is a great feeling of community in our school. I feel that my school does a great job keeping the parents connected and involved.
My Project
With the addition of this leveled library, the children will be able to choose books to read independently or with partners. As they progress to higher levels, they will have a great selection of literature from which to choose.
Some of the most enriching learning takes place when children are working in small groups on certain reading targets such as beginning or ending sounds. The children look forward to their small group time every day. The resources such as the alphabet stamps and the phonics sort, will be added to new reading centers.
I believe that all children deserve a classroom filled with quality books, games and supplies.
Many of my students live in homes where they don't have any books. I send home books each week for them to read. They are always so thrilled when they see the new ones. I cant wait to see how excited they will be to play new games and to start digging into a new leveled library! And when I see them enthusiastic about reading and playing phonics games, I know that it was all worth it!
