Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a new middle school that opened in 2013 in a tight-knit community, in an area where ninety-seven percent of the population lives in poverty. About seventy-five percent of the student population is Spanish-speaking, first or second generation immigrants from the Caribbean.
Many of my students are affected by the socio-emotional, behavioral and physical consequences of living in poor and unstable circumstances, which unfortunately can result in lower academic performance, as well as an increased number of health and behavioral issues.
My students often struggle with remembering instructions, staying on task and managing their time, all of which contribute to the achievement gap among low income communities with limited educational resources.
That being said, my students are hilarious, collaborative, eager and gritty! They inspire me everyday to be a better teacher and do right by them and their families. Their success is my success. I love my job, and I love my students!
My Project
These are last minute items that I'd like to have in stock in my Advisory classroom! Lots of fidget toys and a large sand timer for my 3-minute Peace Place that I'm creating in the classroom. Also, adding wallets and pencil pouches for students who cannot afford their own. My summer school students challenged me to learn how to solve a Rubik's Cube, so I did! I put several of those on the list as well because once I "wow" them with my new knowledge, I want to challenge them to learn the algorithms as well.
I'm also including academic books, activity cards and tools (like the expandable balls) used to promote mindfulness, which my school is wholly embracing this year.
Just a few minutes at least once a day is proven to help with focus and being present, which then sets the students up for a successful academic day. I'm a big fan!
In order to be an effective math teacher, I need create a calm, productive space where my students feel safe to make mistakes, ask questions and learn from each other. These items all contribute to my potential to create that ideal environment that my students and I are seeking. Thanks in advance for your support!
