This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Arggh!! Our white boards are stained, our highlighters are dried out, our pencils are broken, our pens have died- we are a broken down mess when it comes to writing tools and we need your help!

My students are all children living in an urban, high poverty setting who have been identified as children with special education needs.

They all struggle in a variety of ways with oral language and oral communication as a result of their disabilities. Therefore, nearly all of them also struggle with written language and conveying meaning through writing. In addition to their struggles in school many of my students struggle at home as well- with hunger, violence, instability, frequent moves, and lack of educational supports. Despite all of these struggles my students remain motivated and cheerful- they want to do their best and they really want to learn. I am lucky to get to work with such great kids and hope that I can make a difference in their lives by providing them with strategies and tools to deal with the obstacles in their lives.

My Project

As a speech and language pathologist I spend my time helping my students improve their oral language skills. However, research is increasingly showing a strong correlation between oral and written language skills and proving that one cannot be targeted without impacting the other. Therefore, I have been increasingly using writing strategies and projects in order to support my children's IEP goal attainment and oral language skills. Therefore we need good writing tools- clean dry erase boards, fresh full length pencils, wet and working highlighters for editing, pens with ink in them- you know, the basics!

Children cannot create without basic tools- my students sadly are missing new and working tools for writing.

In supporting their oral language skills I spend a lot of time working on their written language skills and am certain we would be more successful with full size pencils and working pens.
