This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a school on the far northeast side of Chicago where 100% of the students receive free lunch. Due to the lack of funding, I am not able to buy any new books for my 6th grade Language Arts classroom. We are trying to improve test scores and prepare for the new Common Core assessments, but we do not have the resources we need. Our students are wonderful and work extremely hard. They often comment on our lack of quality reading materials, and it is easy to see their disappointment. As I add more high-interest books to our library, I'm finding my high-level readers are complaining they don't have anything to read
My students need book shelves to keep the classroom library organized.
Our classroom was lucky to get many new books last school year, but now we don’t have enough room to properly store and organize them for my students to find books to read. My goal is to get them to read more not less so they need to be able to have easy access to the books!
My Project
The bookshelves we are using in our classroom are older than the students and some older than me! I tried to rehab with by covering them in duct tape 7 years ago when I started at Jordan, but they are on their last leg! We need sturdy metal shelves to organize our classroom library. We currently only have 3 old and small bookshelves, and that’s not enough room! The shelves are overflowing with books, which makes it hard to keep them organized! Therefore, we need more shelves to make the books accessible and easy to find. Please help make reading our books easier!
