Broadmor Orchestra Students with Perfect Position

My students need shoulder rests to help them hold their instruments correctly.

My Students

My project is to help 5th grade orchestra students. They are beginners who have never played before this year. They have begun learning how to play violin, viola, and cello.

They are a diverse group of students.

They are excited to have the opportunity to participate in our school orchestra program. They work hard to overcome any obstacles and strive for excellence in my class. I am proud of their tenacity.

My class is their first experience playing and instrument and being a part of a performing ensemble. I hope to show them the joy and teamwork that being in orchestra can provide them.

My Project

Shoulder rests help violin and viola players support the instrument in the correct position. A good shoulder rest not only helps with the instrument position, but also reduces fatigue on the student by giving them better support and body alignment. Shoulder rests also allow more freedom in the left hand since the neck and shoulder can support the instrument.

We currently use flimsy sponges which I liken to wearing flip flops on your feet.

It's better than bare feet. But a shoulder rest is like a tennis shoe. It provides more support and comfort. I would like to provide shoulder rests to the students at Broadmor so all my students can have the best orchestra education possible.
