I currently work in a Title I School in Wyoming. Each day most of my students come to school with great energy and excitement. The students within my 2nd-grade class come from a variety of backgrounds both socioeconomically and culturally.
Students are provided with many opportunities and acquire background knowledge from the experiences that we provide at school during the school day, that they are not otherwise exposed to in their daily lives.
In order to provide real-life, hands-on engaging activities for students; I like to create and provide authentic learning opportunities for them within the school setting. Many of the students that I work with come from differing backgrounds and situations; which do not allow them to be able to have exciting and engaging opportunities to learn, create, and put learned skills to practice.
My Project
Many of my students come from situations in which they do not get to experience hands-on or technology-based learning and experiences due to circumstances that are beyond their control. They lack books to read and opportunities to utilize technology, such as iPads.
Students would have an escape at school, a way to use their imaginations and access to technology while using the iPad and high interest engaging books.
Students would be engaged in their learning and feel involved.
These learning resources (iPad and books) will be used during one on one instruction, centers, and class activities. The iPad and books will give students a chance to have multi-modal learning experiences that are fun and engaging.
One way in which struggling readers can become confident and independent in their own learning is by being able to hear and see what they are reading as they follow along and read.
One way I want to help with this confidence building and reading practice is with the use of the iPad for a reading station. Students will pick a chosen text. Then with an application on the iPad, will be able to see highlighted words as the book is read out loud. The highlighted text will help struggling readers with one to one correspondence with unknown words and will help students find success and feel confident in their reading.
The informational books, which are aligned with our second grade Science standards, will provide students with reading practice in: text features, scientific processes, questioning and reading comprehension.
