Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
In our Spanish Language courses we engage in reading different novels as a whole class, in small groups, and individually. These books We're Not From Here (No somos de aquí) and The Hate You Give (El odio que das) allow my students to engage in reading literature that is interesting to them and in our target language, Spanish. Reading is an essential part of learning. It helps us engage with new vocabulary, different styles of writing, discussions, and various projects. It also helps our students learn about people who have different experiences than our own.
The stories in We're Not From Here and The Hate You Give are culturally relevant and encourage students to dive into reading.
We're Not From Here is read before completing an interview project about migrant community members. The Hate You Give is read as part of a student led book club where they create questions and topics to guide discussions. Currently, our students are sharing the few copies we have of these books. Your donations would allow all students to have their own copies to take home and become more familiar with the text.
