My 86 students gifted learners are in grades K-5.
They are veracious readers, above level mathematicians, wickedly creative and found of everything STEAM related. Our elementary school has 650 students, I would say we are close knit community. We strongly believe in rigor, relationship, and relevance in all that we do with and for students. We share a campus with a high school and middle school as we have a collaborative relationship with the students at each of these schools. Our school encourages the use of BYOT- Bring Your Own Technology.
My Project
I am requesting two devices for my students to share in my classroom. These two devices will help level the playing field when students do not have a device. I have two devices that I personally have that my students use. The addition of two more will help. Just one small example of how this will help is everyday we start with a "Fast Find It". I pose a question to students related to what we are currently working on and they are to see who can find an answer from a credible source first. Those without a device aren't always engaged in having to go to a computer. Creating movies IE Telegamis and talking with peers on-line ie Join Me, Voice Thread and blogging are just a few more examples of daily activities that take place in my classroom. With the use of technology, I am hoping to operate on a transformational level.
In the BYOT classroom, students can discover new ways to use their technology for learning purposes as they interact with their teachers and each other to research information, solve complex problems, create original products, and publish their work to show what they have learned.
The different technology tools available within a BYOT classroom lead teachers to change their instruction from a one-size-fits-all model to a more individualized one.
