Broaden Our Bookroom View and Show That Black Books Matter
Help me give my students high-quality books that represent strong, black characters. These will be added to our school's shared book room for all of our students and teachers to access.
My students inspire and surprise me all of the time! I have the privilege of working with small groups of learners who work hard, collaborate, and continue to build their reading stamina and language skills every day. We live in a small mountain community in Northern California. My first through fifth-grade students, many of whom are Dual-language Learners, need additional support with reading, writing, and language development. They thrive in learning environments where they feel safe taking risks; where they perceive reading and writing as positive and attainable; and where they know their voices will be heard and honored by those around them.
My students are eager learners who speak a variety of languages, demonstrate unique learning needs, and respond well to rich & engaging instructional approaches.
My students have loving, supportive families who want them to succeed, so we want to provide them with as many tools as possible to help them do so during distance learning! (We all know that this is a daunting task, for a variety of reasons, and we want to remove as many obstacles as possible!)
My Project
We are always trying to diversify our book room collection to offer books that reflect the students in our school, as well as broaden their worldview and offer them a glimpse into the lives of others.
If we can support a wide range of authors, illustrators, and independent book stores while buying quality books for our school, that is even better!
Every decision that we make has consequences and we want our students to feel that they are capable of social action on a variety of different levels. Purchasing books that matter is part of that process.
We want to support Mahogany Books, an independent bookstore dedicated to providing books written for, by, or about people of the African Diaspora. In doing so, we would like to provide students an opportunity to read the autobiography of Misty Copeland, become inspired by the biographies of strong, black figures in The Undefeated while reading Kwame Alexander's beautiful words and Kadir Nelson's phenomenal illustrations. We would also like to share the book Parker Looks Up, which is the story of a young girl looking up to see the magnificent image of Michelle Obama in a museum, which opens up the world of hope and possibility for her, as well as offer the charming story of Tallulah, The Toothfairy CEO.
All of these books will contribute greatly to our growing collection of diverse books, while also helping to support the ongoing publication of more books. Thank you so much for considering contributing to this project!
