Teacher Professional Development: I need an encoder for our school’s daily televised “Good Morning” news show to provide a higher quality and more effective broadcast. <profdevpilot>
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Before school, several students and I gather to begin the production of our daily school-wide news show. With all the time and planning that goes into making it a success, I want it to be seen and enjoyed by everyone throughout our building. The purchase of an encoder will do just that.
For years, I taught in elementary and middle school classrooms.
However, a personal love of reading and the opportunity to teach literacy, social studies, science and even math through books steered me towards a teaching career in the library. In doing so, I have had the opportunity to grow as an educator through the different responsibilities that accompany the position. As a result, I was recognized by our faculty as our school’s Teacher of the Year two years ago. This affirmation of my work has been a catalyst to continue to better myself and, in turn, better the services offered through our school’s media center. At the same time, I am highly committed to encouraging students through the celebration of their successes. One way to achieve both goals is a revamp of our library-sponsored morning show broadcast. While learning how to use the new production equipment is challenging for me, the potential it brings for the show and in turn our students is well worth the effort.
My Project
At a recent school district technology conference, I had the opportunity to learn about a news show system. To maximize its use, I will attend vendor sponsored professional development. Topics to be covered include: setting up the broadcast equipment, how to control and manage sound issues, creating and adding background slides, merging slide backgrounds with foreground images, using the switcher to transition to different backgrounds, correcting pixelation, transitioning from live on-air images to pre-recorded video, camera functions, and creating a story board.
I will learn how the encoder streams the broadcast through the building along with its setup and operation. In addition to these formal training sessions, I will visit other schools that have this equipment to see and learn from their production methods. While students play a vital role in our news show production, the encoder will be solely used by the teacher.
The encoder will allow our show to be seen on large interactive boards in our classrooms rather than on small televisions currently in use.
As a result of its purchase and my professional development, students will learn to write compare and contrast multiple-paragraph essays discussing the differences between the show before and after the addition of the encoder. A monthly budgeting unit is also planned. Students will learn to how to budget for upcoming one-time expenses, like the encoder.
