My Students

Hello, I am a fifth grade teacher in a small town Title I school in north Florida. Our school is in a rural area that suffers from high-poverty. The majority of my students are struggling learners that come from broken homes. As their teacher it is my job to teach them not only the standards, but how to be a good person and the beauty of the world around them. I want them to realize that there is a wonderful world beyond their doorstep.

My Project

The book Wonder is an amazing novel that incorporates rich language and fifth grade standards. Not only am I able to teach a rigorous content with this book, but it also allows me to teach children to be kind and believe in themselves.

I am planning to use Wonder for a novel study in my classroom to help students develop a passion for reading.

With such a diverse population this book brings students together and teaches students how important their words and actions are. We will be incorporating many projects with the book such as the use of graphic organizers, inferencing, theme, compare and contrast, and cause and effect. For our final project we will compare and contrast the book with the movie.

I want to make a difference in not only my classroom, but my entire community. The novel Wonder helps me do just that!
