My Students
Children are full of energy striving through the year to become matured physically, mentally, socially and emotionally. “The first step toward success is taken when you refuse to be a captive of the environment in which you first find yourself.”~Mark Caine. Theater instills learning concepts.
Since becoming a physical educator, my passion is to serve my school by becoming one of the best educators that the nation has to offer.
I believe that a healthy lifestyle, quality education and social skills are a necessity to be successful in the world we live in today. With great pleasure, I am seeking to pursue a rather unique fellowship this summer. My learning goal is to enhance my skills on how to effectively address three critical areas at my school; health education, academic achievement and social skills. I believe that I will be able to accomplish this goal by attending the Seattle Repertory Theater. This year, in addition to teaching physical education, I have been given the task to teach social and emotional learning (SEL). I am also responsible for teaching health, character and sex education. I teach all of these subjects to Kindergarten through Eighth Grade students.
My Project
Bringing Theater into the Classroom (BTiC) Workshop is a program that teaches all the tools that are needed to integrate performing arts on a daily basis in any subject including physical education, social and emotional learning and health. The institute will offer “hands-on” days of learning how to create effective learning environments, instruct and assess social and personal skills, test ideas and build them into effective lesson plans, and increase student achievement by using unique methods to make literature fun, physical and active. Teachers will learn how to encourage students to have an active relationship with a book through voice, body, and imagination. I will learn acting skills and playwriting exercises. Opportunities will be given to try out methods using drama and be coached by professional teaching artists and teen interns. The workshop includes an extensive resource notebook.
Students will improve life skills by participating in activities that they enjoy.
Students love to be entertained and especially by their peers. They will be given the opportunity to work together on skits and digital storytelling projects. While participating, they will improve their communication skills and develop more respect for each other. Parent involvement encourages children to learn even more. I will increase parent involvement by organizing a drama club and perform a play.
