This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my students rarely get the opportunity to travel outside of our city. Their parents rarely watch the news, no newspapers or magazines are purchased in their homes, and they have no idea what is going on in the world around them.
I have a classroom of approximately 26 5th grade students, depending on the day.
Many of them come from extremely low income homes and many of them are single family homes. For most of my students, I am the most consistent person in their lives. On any given day, I am a mother, a counselor, a doctor, a therapist, and a teacher for these students.
My Project
I want to show my students that there is so much that is happening in the world around them, and there is so much that they have that they can be grateful for. One of the best ways I know to do this is by introducing them to current events. I want to give my students a subscription to Time for Kids to show them what is happening in the world around them. Not only is it a great resource for current events, but it also provides a real-life example of nonfiction text, and allows for great comprehension instruction.
Through helping to fund this project, you will open the door for my students to the world around them.
They can explore new worlds and possibly find new interests. They will be more prepared for junior high and high school by already having familiarity with nonfiction text. They will have a new world opened to them.
Edition 5 - 6 with Around the World (Grades 5 and 6) Pricing is valid for orders placed after March 2010.
