Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are inner city youth between the ages of 18 and 25. They face many challenges in their home lives and all have been unable to complete high school for one reason or another. Our program gives students the opportunity to earn their high school diploma. Over 50% of our student population are English Language Learners.
Our program is a "second chance" one for at-risk youth who did not have the opportunity to finish high school.
As an Environmental Science Teacher (Life/Earth Science), my students' learning could really be enhanced by hands-on activities in the classroom and outdoor learning experiences, such as field trips.
Hands-on learning activities such as labs and field trips provide invaluable learning experiences for students.
Our school currently does not have a science lab or any supplies, nor a budget for this.
My Project
As a science teacher, I try to get my students to experience the real world by taking them on field trips.
The nature of our program doesn't allow all students to attend the field trips.
We are a work-school program where students only attend classes for 2 days a week. So many students miss out on this great opportunity to take some amazing field trips.
My students are inner-city, low-income students many of whom use public transportation. They rarely leave the immediate school area.
The Google Cardboard viewers will allow the students who missed the field trip to attend virtually.
