This experiment will help students master the learning objective of identifying the properties of ocean water that can affect the geographic distribution of coastal and marine organisms. These lab supplies will allow me to conduct exciting classroom activities that give the students valuable hands-on science experience. In this experiment, students will investigate ocean layering and learn that there are two distinct ocean layers- warm and cold; and that warm water stays on top, while colder water sinks to the bottom. Students will use 100 ml and 500 ml beakers, glass flasks, and thermometers to investigate what happens when water of different temperatures meet. The beakers will allow to students to measure out the correct amount of hot or cold water while the glass containers will hold the water of different temperatures. A set of classroom thermometers is essential so students can measure and record water temperature. Overall, this experiment will give students a better understanding of ocean layering as it relates to depth and temperature, which in turn explains the distribution of marine organisms found in the ocean. This experiment will meet one of our school wide learner outcomes to develop critical thinkers who use the inquiry process in their learning. This project will enhance student learning by giving items to make their science learning fun and interesting. Overall, they will enjoy science more and be more motivated as they earn credits toward a high school diploma. Currently, our school has no science lab or supplies and it is not in our budget.
