My Project

Witches, greed, lust, and a corrupt government. Sounds like the ingredients for a great movie, right? These events are part of a dark period in American history known as the Salem Witch Trials.

I teach 11th-grade English at a small, high-needs school in New York City, where many students struggle with reading and writing.

I would love to bring this period to life by having them read Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible. My students are a fantastic group who love being able to relate things they read in English to their social studies class.

For this proposal, I am requesting copies of The Crucible that my students will read and annotate in class. They will also study the historical periods of the play (both the Salem Witch Trials and the McCarthy era), which will help them in their U.S. History class. Since the play is rich in terms of character and themes, we will hold multiple Socratic seminars to discuss its complexities and delve into understanding the play's logical fallacies. Reading this important work in American literature will provide students with a better understanding of the foundations of our judicial system and our country's moral conscience. The deep level of analysis they will do will also better prepare them for the type of work they can expect in college.

In the past, my students have noted that The Crucible is one of the most powerful pieces of literature they have read in high school.
