All year long, my ESL team has been focused on providing opportunities for silent sustained reading for our learners, for three reasons:
First, we want to build reading stamina in our learners; second, to foster a love of reading and a class that they look forward to coming to; and third, because it's maximally differentiated!
When every learner is reading an on-level book, they are ALL learning at their level, and that is an amazing and rare classroom to walk into! We've decided to roll out more opportunities for solo reading into all of our ESL intervention blocks, and need bigger libraries to make that happen.
My kids have been TEARING through these National Geographic readers, Fly Guy books, and reworked fairy tales. They're full of interesting pictures and images, are always written about high interest topics, and contain rich vocabulary to prep them all across the classes they're taking. Through these books, my students have told me about mummies in Egypt, volcanoes in Ancient Greece, the perfect conditions for a tornado, and so much more. These books provide a window into the real world, while building the general knowledge vocabulary that our ESL students are so in need of!
By funding this project, you'll be outfitting three different classrooms with book sets to take them through hours of sustained reading time. You will be giving our students one of the most precious gifts a teacher can offer - learning to love reading!
