Bringing the Outdoors Inside

Help me give my students the materials needed to create and upkeep live terrariums with donated fish tanks!

My Project

Recently, a teacher who retired this year donated 6 fish tanks to us! My biology kids would like to turn these into terrariums to place around the school and to bring life into our windowless classrooms in the building. The aquariums are various sizes and dimensions, and my students are excited to design the layouts and care for live plants and see them thrive. We would also like to create some weatherproof tops (using the weather stripping) so that we can host both humid and dry environments.

Using these materials, we will be able to create the foundations for all 6 tanks and be sure the environment is conducive to plant growth and health.

We will be propagating different plants to add to the terrariums after we are back in session and the foundations have been laid to support them. This will not only help students learn how to upkeep their own houseplants, but will also teach them about environments and sustainability. Plants have also been shown to improve mental wellness in the classroom. Though this is a small project, we expect it to make big waves!
