My students attend an inner-city public high school in New York. All of my students are highly motivated and excited to learn about science in their local communities. It is my job to make science come to life, so that my students can develop interest and passion in the sciences.
Many of my students feel as though they are "not good at science," so I am working to show them that science is for everyone.
I am working to make my class completely inquiry-based, where my students ask and try to answer questions about the natural world. Many of my students are just waiting to be inspired to go on to study science when they enter college.
All of my students are passionate and energetic learners. They love to learn using hands-on activities, where they can actually experience what we discuss in class. My classroom is a lively atmosphere, where students work in groups on a daily basis to solve problems and examine real-world scientific issues.
My Project
I can guarantee that the lives of my students will change with the donation of these materials. My students will get a unique chance to dissect a wide variety of marine organisms that we will learn about in class such as the squid and shark. We all know that the best way to learn is by performing hands-on experiments and these dissections will provide my students with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to examine a wide variety of marine organisms and learn about them in the process. We will also be able to use the water test kits to monitor and maintain our class aquariums!
I feel that this project is extremely important because my goal as a science teacher is to get my students excited about science.
In the past, the dissections have literally made the class. In the end-of-the-year survey I give to the students, almost all of the students in the past have said that the dissections performed in class were the highlights of the year!
I have a chance to change my students' lives by making science fun and exciting. By utilizing these materials, I can guarantee that my classroom will be more engaging and the students will understand more through all of the experiential learning that will occur.
