I am truly happy and lucky to teach my diverse population of students in New York City. What my students have in common is that they usually have a physical or emotional setback that limits their ability to perform in a classroom. That is why it is truly a gift to be able to teach them and watch their growth through the course of instruction. The satisfaction as a teacher does not just come from them passing a test or answering a difficult question, it is in the ability to aid them along their young's life's journey and witness how they face their challenges. For me, the greater the resources that I can put into each student, usually the greater the outcome. If I can introduce students to a book or subject that they never knew before, it opens a whole new exciting world to them. This brings joy to everyone in my class.
My Project
Most of my students at Ronald McDonald House face health challenges and are physically unable to go to school. I have to bring the classroom to them. Unfortunately, I can't bring a laboratory of STEM supplies to their homes for science due to the constraints of traveling to students' home in Manhattan. So, what better way than to use portable robots for STEM instruction?
I can easily bring the Arcbotics Robot in a traveling bag for my students to apply STEM principles in their learning.
In addition, my students are interested in robots which will make the instruction more engaging and relevant to their lives. Because of their health challenges, many of the students have difficulty keeping up with the academic challenges of the science curriculum. Incorporating robots into the science curriculum will allow for both creativity and play, while still using the skills important for a scientist. I usually teach students from grades 6-12, so I could use the robots for instruction in any of these grades.
