This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We begin our day with over a hundred students that attend our open gym before school. Then we see Kindergarten to 6th grade students throughout the day. Our classes are fun and activity-based but there is very little equipment to use. So the students do a lot more waiting around than participating.

We are a Title I school where almost 90% of our students are on Free or Reduced cost lunch program.

We provide Breakfast in the classroom, snacks for students after school and on Fridays we give our students a bag of food so they have something to eat over the weekend. We are a Kindergarten through sixth grade elementary school. We also provide an open gym before school and tutoring after school. Our students are great kids but come from a very low socio-economic community. They do not have many of the same opportunities as most students their age have.

My Project

Our school has lacked the funds to update/replenish our equipment for the last 5 years and we aren't able to provide students with the proper tools to succeed. We will be using this much needed equipment to support our Physical Education program as well as our before school program. Some equipment that we would like to purchase would be cones, poly-spots, various balls, and nets. This added equipment would assist our instruction and demonstrate to students how sports and fitness will help them become fit and stay fit. Cones and poly-spots are essential to our instruction of basic skills. Aside from teacher created games and activities, we would use soccer and volleyball nets to help promote sports that are offered in our community.

The demographics of our community are such that most of our families are unable to financially provide their children with outdoor fitness equipment.

Because of this many of our students are sedentary. We have taken on the role of activity and fitness promoters to change their lifestyles. This equipment would be an investment in future programs and would reach thousands of students over many years.
