Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach third grade in a high-need community in California. My school serves a population of about 90% English language learners. Most of the school's families are considered low-income, therefore, our school tries to provide many of the supplies for our students.

This year, our music program was replaced with a World Language program. Though I fully believe that my students would benefit from extra support in the English language, I was disappointed to see the arts begin to disappear from our school. To replace our music program, the general education teachers are beginning to teach music, art, dance, and drama in the classroom on Fridays. This piece of our week is an incredibly valuable portion of developing the whole student and involving them in activities of learning that are sometimes more easily accessible and kinesthetic.

Our five third grade teachers are each taking responsibility for an area of the visual and performing arts. Much to my dismay, our supplies and supplemental items are low or non-existent. I would like to provide students with musical instruments, like drums, bells, and rhythm sticks to assist in my music program. As many of the students are second language learners, I would also like to teach them about music from around the world. It is very important for the children to feel like their culture has played an important role in the arts. I would like for the students to learn about artists from the past and their style of art. Biographies of these artists are key to making this art program successful, as well as providing the paper and supplies necessary. I would like to provide the students with some music, ribbons, and supplemental materials for dance and drama. With all of these arts areas covered, our students will be able to feel successful in their learning, will experience more culture, and will be learning about things outside of their sphere of knowledge.

Your help will not only make a difference for our students, but it will, perhaps, change lives. Currently, our supplies are limited to what the teachers themselves can provide from their own paychecks, and that's pretty limited. Our students deserve to experience the world. Music, art, drama, and dance should all be important parts of a child's life experience. You have the power to make it happen for our third grade students.
