This year my school is focusing on personalized learning in 6th grade. My students desire to have access to technology in order to effectively engage in the content. Even with our schools 'Bring Your Own Device program', we do not have enough devices for every student.
We currently have 61% of our student population on free or reduced price lunch.
Less than half of the students do not have a device that they can bring into the classroom. Many of the devices we do get in the classroom have broken screens, or run so slowly they often crash during a daily use. Many of our students come from lower income families but do not consider themselves disadvantaged, but that is just a small obstacle for them to overcome.
My Project
Students in my class will be able to use the device to follow their chosen pathway towards mastery. Once we have given a small mini lesson students will then get to choose their path based on their ability. These paths are largely dependent on each student having a device. Many times we can get by with students sharing devices but it would be great to get to a point where we are 1 device to 1 student.
This project is the second step towards personal learning for my students.
We introduced them to the Microsoft surface so that they can solve and explain problems from their seat while it is projected on the board, and now we are putting the learning paths into their hands to help them understand how important it is to be proactive in their learning.
