This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

During the 2020-2021 school year, when we were coming back to in-person education, I decided to move my classroom outside for the safety of my students who were too young to be vaccinated. Over the 2021-2022 school year, we worked hard to create an engaging, comfortable outdoor space, and we haven't looked back.

Despite all the challenges of the pandemic, my students have been able to learn both academic and social-emotional skills in our outdoor classroom, and it has been admired by coaches, administrators, other teachers, and the families themselves.

They are able to explore freely yet with structure, and to learn by playing and interacting naturally with one another while still gaining the skills they need for more structured kindergarten classes.

I am always on the lookout for anything I can add to our classroom to support the children's learning, and I have been especially looking for STEM materials that promote problem-solving. I have found it in this Kodo Outdoor Magnet Wall, which I first saw at a children's museum. It will be the perfect addition to our outdoor classroom and provide many rich opportunities for teamwork and higher-order thinking, while also being tons of fun!
