Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

One of the assignments after reading novels is for my students to develop a skit for these novels. At the end of the year I want to digitally archive some of their skits. "If a Million People See My Movie, I Hope They See a Million Different Movies." Quentin Tarantino

CANOGA is the oldest high school in the west San Fernando Valley.

It opened with 14 students and 3 teachers on October 4, 1914. Now it serves more than 1400 students. The majority of students are Latinos which is about 83%, Whites make up about 7% of the student body, and the rest is made of African Americans, Asians and other. The majority of my students come from low-income families, and they are in the Title I Program for the free or reduced priced meal. They are all Hispanics, with very similar personal circumstances, such as both parents working full time and one or both of them do not speaking English fluently, and not many of their parents have a college education. Few of them are newly arrived immigrants to the United States, but the majority are first-generation students whose home language is not English and who have been schooled primarily in the United States, and very few are second or third generation students who have learned some aspects of their culture.

My Project

In my class we read several novels and short stories throughout the year. To increase comprehension, language and vocabulary development, one of the assignments is to create a skit or a short 5 minute film where students represent elements leading to the plot, the main characters, and how the problem was solved. I have learned that by doing these projects the students are more engaged and they experience a genuine and unique learning opportunity that will last for a lifetime. What I want this year is to start a digital archive where we can upload these films and have the students view them with their family at home, at school with other classmates and also use some of these skits as examples for my future class. The camera that I am asking for will be used to record their short novels and other scripts. Part of this project is to also listen to audio books read aloud to them. I do this so students can listen to author's tone, intonation and fluency, but my old boom box does not work.

I want to share the creativity of my students with others.

They come up with very unique ways of representing their novels. I've never seen the same adaptation twice. If we digital upload these skits, I can accomplish that. I also want my students to develop a love for literature, and start understanding basic film concepts. Through this project my students lives will be impacted because they are telling a story from their point of view which will be viewed by many different points of views.
