Bringing Science To The Hands Of Students All Year Long

My students need chemicals and glassware like phenol red and beakers to study changes in matter and cell models to have hands-on visuals of micro-organisms.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At the end of the year I want my students to have a deeper curiosity for the things they see in the world around them. Even more, I want them to believe that they have the tools to find the answers to their questions.

The demographics of my school are near 90% for both minority status and free and reduced lunch.

They are a fantastic bunch of kids that come from backgrounds that see them face many challenges that other students their age won't have to face until much later in their lives. However, my students still bring their efforts each and everyday. They are open to new learning experiences and they enjoy success in and out of the classroom. Their minds are always expanding.

My Project

These students will use the materials I've requested to engage in hands-on scientific processes that align with the Utah State Core Curriculum. It will bring the science to life because instead of reading about something in a text book, they will be doing the experiments, gathering the data, and coming to their own conclusions. They will mix substances to observe chemical and physical changes and conservation of mass. They will use the dye to stain cells they extract from their own cheeks and then observe the differences between those and plant cells under a microscope. They will use the magnetic cell models to gain a more concrete understanding of microscopic cell parts. Students will also get to explore differences in minerals and rocks for themselves with the inquiry mineral lab kit. Ultimately, these learning activities and others will result in my students having confidence to formulate test questions and synthesize a conclusion based on their own experiences.

The materials will give my students the opportunity to perform experiments, problem solve, and link scientific ideas to their lives.

School is their avenue to have these explorations and experiences that might influence them to pursue careers in science and health fields. Science, along with other STEM disciplines, can be scary for students. I would love to bring science to their hands and show them that science is for everyone, regardless of gender, age, race, or socio-economic background.
