"I am a fifth grade teacher in a new charter school. Our school was developed for refugees from war-torn countries predominantly Somalia, Kenya and Myanmar. All of our students qualify for free lunches; the majority of my students are English Learners. Our school is a charter school, meaning we are a tuition-free public school offering a unique educational program. Our teachers and staff are sensitive to the diverse needs of our students. Many students arrive at our school speaking little or no English. With our intense math and Language Arts program our goal is to help these children succeed in school and in life and not be "left behind".
Being a 2nd year school, we face the challenge of prioritizing resources when budgeting. Science is not the priority! Scientific experiments rarely occur unless I purchase the supplies myself. Without resources, teaching science is a challenge. However, I am faced with an even greater challenge- teaching students who are just learning English the 5th grade science standards using an outdated textbook!
If I had more up-to-date and hands-on resources available, I would be able to teach science in an engaging way so my students could have fun while learning. The science tubs from Lakeshore are current and provide ample experiments covering all 5th grade science strands. The tubs are project-based with both group and independent activities. My students would be excited to learn about the earth, environmental concerns, and cell make up if they were able to tangibly interact with the ideas.
By donating to this project, you would be helping a willing teacher and eager students. I would be able to teach all the required science standards using up to date materials. My hope is that these students would grow to love nature, their environment, and Earth. With these supplies, my class will be able to apply their knowledge and hopefully be a positive change in the world around them. Thank you for contributing to their success!
