Everyday we do something with science in our classroom. This is a great way to help students look closer at science, in a close and unique way. The opportunity to look at owl pellets up close with microscopes bring science to life.
Our school is a Title One school set in a semi-rural setting.
The students range from living on farms to living on a cul-de-sac. Some of my students have access to some technology and some students' families have a hard time finding enough money for Christmas. They range from poverty to middle class and do not always have the means to have hands-on science equipment that they can explore and learn within their homes. They are hard working and dedicated to their learning as long as they have the resources to be motivated. Hands-on materials help with motivation and fun learning for their whole life.
My Project
The students will be able to have hands-on learning through materials that help focus on science in the environment. This project will help students explore science by using instruments and materials that scientists use to predict and understand the world around them. The microscopes will help my little scientists see the world a little differently. The fourth grade core has rocks and minerals as part of the curriculum. They will use handheld magnifying glasses to look at the rocks and minerals up close, trying to see the crystals that are formed. A microscope will give them a better view of those crystals and see the formation of the rocks in a better, closer view. They will become little scientists themselves and see how instruments can help their predictions and understanding of science.
The students in my class will be able to see the physical environment in a different view.
They will see that things look differently through different perspectives. This will help them see that scientists are able to use instruments to help them answer questions that cannot be seen with just their eyes. i.e. crystals in a rock, etc.
