My 25 students each need subscription to Scholastic's Science World magazine to improve their science literacy and encourage a heightened awareness of current events.

Help give our students access to the science world! Today our world is full of constant scientific discovery, which is shaped by increasing technologies. To fully participate in today's society, we must be informed and opinionated citizens. Help us encourage science literacy through reading!
I teach science in an all-girls urban-charter middle school in the city.
Student demographics comprise approximately 87% African Americans, 10% Hispanics, and 3% Caucasians. Over 97% of students receive free, or reduced lunch. Many of my scholars are below or at reading level, and are working hard year-round to increase their reading levels through school-wide small-group book clubs, and in-class science discussions on current events.
My scholars love science, but struggle with higher-level reading literature that is available at school. This frustrates them, and discourages them from attempting to read more scientific literature independently. With the Scholastic Science World magazines, they can read and comprehend current events and articles because they are tailored to their various reading levels. With these magazines, scholars have more options to choose from for their independent reading time; they have content they can actively use for discussion and debates on science-based issues; and they have up-to-date resources they can use for independent research on topics we learn in the classroom.
Your donations to our project will help empower young women because they will have access to current science- and technology-based information they can read and understand.
They can use this knowledge to better appreciate the changing world around them, to make informed personal choices, and to go on and become strong science-literate women who can contribute to society as future leaders in their chosen careers.
