Bringing Nature into the Urban Classroom

My students need hands-on science materials, like slide sets, butterfly eggs, seeds and soil, to be able to interact with and learn from plants and animals within our urban classroom in order to understand how their life cycles work.

My Students

Remember the joy of a watching a caterpillar crawl, a seed burst open with life, a butterfly land on your hand? My students need to have these experiences and this project will help them.

Do you remember that natural curiosity about the world that children have?

In our Science class, we nurture and explore that curiosity through labs and experiments in both our classroom and school yard, which for many students is their first time with hands-on science. Our public middle school is the most diverse in the city and our classroom is no exception. My students all share a strong bond, a real desire to learn, ask questions and explore. They thrive when given the opportunity to try their own experiments, collect data, and explain their results. Some of my students will go on to become scientists and mathematicians and all of my students will go on to become thoughtful, scientifically literate citizens who understand how to interpret and explain evidence to support their results.

My Project

My students will be able to witness the full life cycle of both Painted Ladies butterflies and Wisconsin Fast Plants - completing an in-depth study of how their structure and functions change throughout their cycle. We will also use the slides and covers for making observations with microscopes.

My students are thrilled whenever they get to practice hands-on science.

They are excited learners who want to understand everything around them and beyond. This project will help them continue to make sense of the natural world.
