Bringing My Students to the 21st Century With Technology.

My Students

I am a reading and special education teacher at a K-8 center in Miami. I teach middle school reading to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade struggling readers and I also teach and support students that have learning difficulties and/or disabilities in all grade levels K-8 at our school. My school is a Title I school which means that about 90% of the students at my school receive free or reduced-price lunch due to their low socioeconomic status. The school is in a high poverty neighborhood so many of my students come from families who struggle financially. As a result, my students endure more problems than average children, and these problems interfere with and hinder their learning.

My Project

I am requesting a MacBook Air laptop which will make such a huge impact in my students' learning environment. This MacBook will allow me to create engaging and interactive lessons for my students. The students will be able to access technology to build background knowledge by seeing visuals and interactive programs in each class whether I am supporting the teacher with the ESE students or teaching a lesson.

By donating to our project, you will help my students be able to have computer time more frequently, virtual experiences and intervention as needed.

My students will also be able to practice and apply their skills learned to complete online assessments that will further their learning. The laptop will provide my students the opportunity to explore virtual fieldtrip opportunities because many of the students cannot afford to pay for field trips outside the building. I will use this laptop to bring my students digital resources and content which make learning more fun and engaging. For example, in math when working in groups I can show the students an interactive video pertaining to the skill that they are learning or in science students can be exposed to nature or animals in their natural habitat without leaving the classroom.

My students will also be able to use the MacBook as a math and science research tool. This MacBook can be shared among research groups in the class and is mobile enough for quick and easy transportation in the classroom. Students will also have the opportunity to use the laptop to complete their intervention programs as needed. These intervention programs are essential to the students because it assists them in the areas of reading, math and science. This laptop will allow students to use computer programs that will enhance their development.
