Bringing Musical Theatre to JBA

Help me give my students the experience of having clear head mics and a theatre. We only have a room that is used as a gym. My scholars need to transform this space with a portable stage.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The scholars I teach are so incredibly creative. With limited funds, space and time, they still find it in themselves to serve the community, build each other up and push themselves to develop into well-rounded individuals. They love being part of the school. They work extremely hard to perfect skills and learn new material. They also love putting on plays.

They participated in a fundraiser for cancer, collected can goods for the homeless, and even gave each other candy cane grams to encourage each other for the holidays.

As a staff, we try to connect them to the realities of this world, being part of the solution but we also want to build the inner child, the whole child.

In that vein, we want to be able to cultivate creativity, connect them to arts and other careers as much as possible. They can find themselves stressed because of the academic rigor our school upholds to. Families love it, but my team realizes, they need other outlets as well to build the whole child. Providing other success is our goal for our scholars, not only academics.

My Project

Our multipurpose room is the only room big enough to perform a play. In the past, we have carried all of our props, costumes, speakers, etc, to other schools nearby who have an auditorium. We lose time and valuable energy going back and forth from our school to the other in order to perform. We also tend to lose our audience.

If we convert our multipurpose room into a theatrical space we will be able to practice there, build even better sets and truly bring musical theatre to our JBA community.

We want to leave a foundation for theatre that our school can continue to build upon.
