Bringing Muckleshoot Language & Culture to Our Classroom

Help me give my students exposure to indigenous art and culture!

My Project

In our classroom, we believe that Native education benefits all students. Through this project, we aim to bring the Muckleshoot dialect of Lushootseed—bəqəlšuɬucid—into our daily learning in respectful and engaging ways.

bəqəlšuɬucid is a dialect of Southern Lushootseed and holds deep cultural importance.

Today, there are no fluent first-language speakers. Revitalizing and teaching this language is a powerful act of cultural resilience and our students will be part of that ongoing work.

We’ve had the opportunity to learn from the Muckleshoot Language Program and have their guidance as we develop this project. With their support, we’re incorporating meaningful materials into our classroom:

- Recordable sound buttons to help students hear and practice key words and phrases

- A music and story player to share traditional Native songs and teachings

- A collection of books by and about Native peoples to support both student and teacher learning

These resources will help students and staff to build authentic connections to Indigenous language and culture. They will also support Native students in feeling seen and valued, while helping all students learn more about the land and people they are connected to.

“The Muckleshoot Language is a dialect of Southern Lushootseed. Lushootseed is the umbrella term referring to the many dialects spoken by tribes around the southern Puget Sound area… In our case, this word is bəqəlšuɬucid, the Muckleshoot Language.”

With your support, we can help keep this language—and the culture it carries—alive for generations to come.
