My students need personal dry erase boards & markers, algebra tiles, tangrams, 3D solids, geoboards, and math puzzles to advance their conceptual understanding of math.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Imagine attempting to wrap your mind around how to divide fractions without the underlying understanding of what, exactly, fractions are. My students face such academic obstacles daily when they are presented with rigorous, PSAT-aligned sixth grade math instruction and don't have laurels to rest on.
My students come from one of the most poverty-stricken neighborhoods in our city and are members of the inaugural class of a college preparatory charter middle school.
As sixth graders, the majority of our scholars began the year reading below a third grade level and unable to perform basic mental math. Scholars attend school from 7:30-4:30 each day, including 6 hour-long academic periods. Each night, scholars complete 1-2 hours of homework to support their academic growth. All daily school activities are aligned with our mission of preparing 100% of our scholars for success in middle school, high school, AP classes, and college.
My Project
As this is our first year in existence as a school, we lack an arsenal of supplies and materials from which to pull items to support lessons. In order to bridge the gap between my students' current levels of mathematic understanding and where I want them to be at the end of the year (on-track to be ready for AP math in high school) I need to be able to provide my students with the hands-on math experiences they need to fill in their gaps in understanding as quickly as possible.
My students are working incredibly hard to master sixth grade skills without the benefit of in-depth understanding of elementary math skills and they do not have the days, weeks, or months to spare that it would take to completely re-teach them the basics of mathematics. Placing physical examples in scholars hands to support the content being taught in a given lesson is the fastest way to remediate correct past misunderstandings that are holding scholars back.
With conceptually-rooted math manipulatives, the budding mathematicians will be able to fill in the gaps in their understanding of math without wasting any time on their path to success in AP classes and college.
