This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 7th graders will be learning about everything from atoms to ecosystems. Science should be hands-on whenever possible. By bringing a fish tank and aquaponics system into the classroom students can see first hand how the basic atoms they learn about during class move and cycle through our natural environment. We currently have a working worm/vermicomposter in class that was generously donated to our class last year. By adding a fish tank and aquaponics system we bring this process full circle. Students learn that the basic atoms found around us are used in photosynthesis and cellular respiration, and are broken down by decomposers to then start the cycle anew as it is taken up by primary producers. Not only are these interconnections in nature fundamentally scientific, but culturally relevant. Here in Hawai'i the interconnectedness between mauka (the mountains) and makai (the sea) are essential to the way of life. With a combined approach using a vermicomposter, fish tank, and aquaponics set up, students will be able to observe some of these crucial interconnectedness found in our natural world.
Students will care for the worms and fish, and set up and maintain the aquaponics system to use that nutrient-rich fish water, which will fertilize the seeds they plant.
All of these things help to create a positive learning environment in which my students can experiment, observe, malama (care for), and make connections.
