This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 4th grade at Hoover School in Redwood City. Over 90% of the students are second language learners. The school is located in a low income area and approximately 75% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. Many of these children have never been outside of Redwood City and they have very limited background knowledge. Because they are second language learners they struggle with vocabulary and with reading fluency. This grant aims to bring music into the my class of 30 students by using an iPod loaded with appropriate songs that build on the curriculum. Using music will not only build background knowledge and give students an understanding of the curriculum, it will also build vocabulary and provide for a fun way to practice reading fluency. Songs will be used in all academic areas including math and language arts but it will probably be used the most in social studies. For example, students will learn songs about building the transcontinental railroad ("I've Been working on the Railroad") and the gold rush ("Oh, California" and "My Darling Clementine"). Music is a vital part of education that is often missed in classrooms. This grant hopes to bring songs to these that build on the curriculum. Thank you for your support.
